Driftwood, Texas is a small unincorporated community in northern Hays County, and is located just 24 miles southwest of downtown Austin.
Although the earliest settlers arrived in the area now known as Driftwood around 1850, the community was really established in the 1880s. Driftwood shrank almost to a ghost town by the early twentieth century; although it grew somewhat by the middle of the century, it returned to its almost-deserted state by the 1970s.
Today, Driftwood is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and is known for its sprawling Hill Country greenspace and big open skies, plus with its varied local establishments and entertainment options such as local barbecue, wineries, breweries, distilleries and event venues, residents can experience and enjoy some of the best things to do in the hill country. Texans drive from all over to spend a day or a weekend in Driftwood.
This part of central Texas is wine country, and as a Driftwood resident, you can experience some of the well-known wineries in the area—Driftwood Estate Winery, the Duchman Family winery, Fall Creek Vineyards to name a few.
