Shoalmont is a visually diverse neighborhood, offering residents a wide range of home and lot sizes. Developed mostly in the 1940s and 1950s, the predominantly mid-century modern and ranch style homes in this neighborhood have stood the test of time and most have been restored or renovated.

Due to its central location and proximity to Mopac (Loop 1), Shoalmont offers an easy commute to downtown, where Shoalmont residents can enjoy all that Austin has to offer—exquisite dining, plenty of retail and shopping outlets, vibrant entertainment and nightlife, outdoor activities, local events or festivals, and other local attractions.

It hosts a farmers' market in the spring and summer and includes recreational facilities for children and small events. More upscale shopping and dining is available at The Domain, a mixed-use shopping center with national retailers about 5 miles north of the neighborhood on MoPac Expressway.

Additionally, active residents and families of Shoalmont have several public parks nearby including the Brentwood neighborhood park, and the Beverly Sheffield District Park along the banks of Shoal Creek, both of which offer plenty of hiking, biking, running and playscapes for kids.
