The real estate website’s 2025 list of the best cities for college graduates had a strong Sun Belt theme. Texas dominated the top five choices of the survey, with first-place Austin being followed by Dallas at No. 3 and San Antonio at No. 4. "Austin metro tops 2.5M residents"

Austin Business Journal shares, "The Austin metro gained an average of about 159 people a day from 2023 to 2024. While that may sound like a lot, it's down slightly from a growth rate of 171 a day during the previous 12-month period.

According to new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, the metro's population climbed by about 2.3% from July 2023 to July 2024, an addition of 58,019 people that brings its total to 2.55 million — the first time it has topped the 2.5 million mark. That factors in everything including people who move here, babies born here and deaths.

At 2.3% growth, that's a slight decline from the 2.6% clocked in the previous 12-month period, when the metro — which consists of Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays and Caldwell counties…

"Georgetown is fastest-growing city of its size for third-straight year"

Austin Business Journal writes, "For the third-straight year, Georgetown is the fastest-growing city of at least 50,000 people by percent change, according to an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Other Austin-area cities weren't far behind.

Georgetown's population reached 96,312 last year, according to newly released city-level data for the 12-month period spanning July 2022 to July 2023. That represents a gain of roughly 9,250 people from the year before — the eighth most in the country among cities of any size based on numeric gains.

"Work begins on development that could bring nearly 3,000 homes to Hutto"

Austin Business Journal writes, "Thousands of homes are headed to Hutto, where Houston-based Empire Continental Land LP is building a sprawling new neighborhood.

Empire Continental Land, the Texas land division of residential builder and developer Empire Communities, announced March 18 that work had begun on the project. Flora, as it is called, will rise on more than 800 acres and have nearly 3,000 homes once complete. It’s yet another example of massive neighborhoods sprouting in largely rural areas of the metro as Samsung Electronics Co. "Austin considers change to density bonus programs to address public safety needs"

Austin Business Journal reports, "developers working in Austin may eventually have a new tool when seeking additional building height for their projects.

With police and fire response times unacceptable in some cases, City Hall has taken steps toward a new element to its density bonus programs that would offer incentives to developers if they donate land to the city that can be used for public safety facilities.

"Report: Austin one of top cities millennials moved to in 2022"

Austin Business Journal reports, "a new study released by financial technology company SmartAsset this month named Austin one of the most popular destinations millennials moved to in 2022. The analysis found one in four millennials moved to a different city last year, with the study ranking cities based on “the highest percentage of the population represented by newly transplanted millennials.”

Austin ranked No. 9 in pulling new residents within the 25 to 44 age range, per the study. The Lone Star State’s capital attracted 103,461 millennials, with the new residents marking 11% of the city’s overall population. The report added the median age in Austin is also in line with that trend, at 34.7 years old.

"Suburbs are setting the pace for migration. But patterns are shifting."

Austin Business Journal writes, "when it comes to population growth during the Covid-19 era, large suburbs are shining. Urban centers and rural counties? Not so much.

That’s according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau with updated population estimates for 2022. 

Nationally, counties with populations of at least 250,000 in 2020 grew by an average of 0.84% between 2020 and 2022. For all counties, the average was 0.44%.

But a closer look at the data shows the strongest growth was generally in ring counties — suburban counties located within the nation's largest metro areas.
