University of Texas at Austin DAVID SUCSY

Austin Business Journal shares, "WalletHub’s annual list of the best college towns and cities in America is out, and Austin ranked No. 1 again.

Austin has taken the top spot on the list for three consecutive years. The annual list considers wallet friendliness, social environment and academic and economic opportunities.

Central Texas is home to The University of Texas at Austin, Concordia University and St. Edward's University, as well as Huston-Tillotson University and Austin Community College. Austin also has one of the highest average annual job growth rates in the country at 7.04%, according to the report, which WalletHub pointed to as a plus for graduates.

It was also No. 1 when ranked by large city size.

Here are the top 10 best college towns and cities according to the report:

1. Austin

2. Ann Arbor, Michigan

3. Orlando

4. Tampa

5. Scottsdale, Arizona

6. Las Vegas

7. Charlottesville, Virginia

8. Gainesville, Florida

9. Raleigh, North Carolina

10. Atlanta

The full report can be found here.

The ranking also comes in the middle of college application season when students decide what schools to attend.

Some of Central Texas' higher education institutions are experiencing an increase in enrollment, but for most it's still not enough to return to pre-pandemic levels.

The University of Texas at Austin seems to be an exception here and nationally. The university's enrollment grew by 570 students from 2022 to 2023, marking an all-time high with this year's enrollment at more than 53,361, including a few hundred students enrolled online. That's up from 51,238 students on campus and enrolled virtually in 2019 before the spread of Covid-19, according to ABJ list research."
