Austin Business Journal shares, "Austin-based, 3D-printing company Icon Technologies Inc. is continuing its partnership with East Austin's Community First Village, where construction is underway on more of the company's unique, printed homes.
Icon is partnering with Lennar Foundation, the charitable arm of homebuilder Lennar Corp., to build 100 homes at Community First using its industrial-scale 3D-printing technology, according to an announcement. Icon has already built 17 homes and facilities at the development, including Community First's welcome center.
Community First Village, created by Austin-based nonprofit Mobile Loaves and Fishes, provides affordable, permanent housing for people coming out of chronic homelessness. It will be able to house an estimated 1,800 formerly homeless people once its current phases of development are complete.
“Community First! Village is at the center of innovation in our country in terms of communities and movements that are effectively addressing homelessness,” stated Brooke Bauguess, Icon's vice president of marketing and communications. “With the help from our friends at Lennar Foundation, we can continue our mission to deliver dignified homes for those in need and continue the long-term relationship with Mobile Loaves & Fishes.”
Icon’s new homes at Community First will be a mix of townhomes and single-family residences ranging from 380 square feet to 1,040 square feet.
The 51-acre Community First Village, which opened in 2015 and had about 460 homes as of 2022, is in the midst of a 127-acre, two-phase expansion, according to the announcement. Icon’s 100 homes are just a fraction of those being built at the development, with nearly 1,400 new homes underway.
It’s not Icon’s first partnership with Lennar. The two companies previously partnered to develop 100 3D-printed homes within Georgetown’s Wolf Ranch neighborhood. Icon’s homes in that neighborhood are a bit different from those being built at Community First, however. They have eight separate floor plans ranging from 1,500 to 2,100 square feet.
Icon has much more going on as well. The company broke ground on what it contends is the world’s first 3D-printed hotel in Marfa in September. It's also printing eight homes in Wimberly, and it 3D-printed a 27-foot structure in March to show off a new multistory, printing-capable robot, according to an Icon representative."
